Henry Hopkins View of Nine Juror's Statement
It was a genuine challenge to select those artist who are to receive Utah Arts Council awards for 1992. All of the fifty applicants who applied in such diverse areas as crafts, photography, printmaking, drawing, mixed media, and new genre, as well as painting and sculpture, were worthy of consideration, and it was difficult to reduce the number from fifty to nine.

Based on my best judgment, I tried to select artist who I felt were meeting a national standard for excellence and who were also offering a unique vision with their chosen medium. It was also of interest to me that the body of work presented in slides or video form had a consistency of purpose. Perhaps another juror would have been less interested in the area of New Genre, but it seems to me that much of the future of art lies in that general direction.
