The Bee-fly (Bombyliidae) is a small, hairy fly that resembles a bee. It is covered in long dense hairs with clear, veined wings. The bee-fly has large eyes with a long, distinctive proboscis to feed on nectar from flowers. It does not sting and is an important pollinator. As the morning sun crested over the gorgeous granite mountains, hundreds, if not thousands of bee-flies were feeding on the blooming rabbit brush that carpeted the desert floor. I got in close with my macro lens, hoping I wouldn’t get stung, not knowing at the time that these cute insects do not sting. For one brief moment, after taking many photographs, one of the bee-flies remained still long enough for me to capture this close-up. Photographed in the Mineral Mountains at the Tube Hill Campground near the Rock Corral Recreation Area in Milford, Beaver County, Utah. American Association of University Women Exhibit
In September, Elizabeth Miklavcic had the honor to participate in the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Utah Women Artists Exhibition 22nd Biennial Juried Exhibition. Her macro photograph Bee-fly on Rabbit Brush, was juried into this show. The opening reception was held September 10, 2026, and the gallery exhibit ran from September 10 - October 14, 2024. The co-chairs for this exhibit were Marilyn Shearer and Jennifer Malherbe, and juried by Madeleine Plonsker and Raquel Carrera.
